The Peace Prayer of Saint Francis

Author unknown, first printed in 1912. Named for Saint Francis of Assisi.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is offense, let me bring forgiveness.
Where there is discord, let me bring union.
Where there is error, let me bring truth.
Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.
Where there is despair, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.
Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.

O Lord, let me not seek so much
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in forgetting ourselves that we find,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we rise to eternal life.

First printed, without an author’s name, in La Clochette, Paris, December 1912. It carries Saint Francis’s name because of its Franciscan spirit; the English is a close translation of that first French text.
